Car insurance fronting is a subject which every so often gets dragged into the spotlight.
To clarify, a fraud called “fronting” occurs when a young person has a car in their own name, but the insurer is falsely told that someone else other than the main driver of the motor insurance policy is driving the vehicle most of the time. The most common example of this is where parents are fronting policies for their children in an attempt to lower the cost of car insurance premiums.
Recent research delivers evidence that as many as one in five young drivers are complicit in what’s known as insurance fronting. As a consequence of this car insurance firms are rejecting a thousand claims a year as some parents and children lie to save money.
Fronting has been made illegal because it presents a much higher risk for the insurers than what they have quoted you for. To them, the main driver should be the one using the car most of the time and any additional drivers should be driving occasionally. It is on this basis and the fact that an experienced driver is less likely to be involved in an accident than a young driver that the premiums are considerably cheaper.
The insurance industry itself will not reveal any figures on how many claims it is turning down, but the Financial Ombudsman Service says it is dealing with between 100 and 200 fronting disputes each year, and that indicates that firms will be dealing with around 1000 such cases annually.

An inventor has come up with a device that, he says, has the potential to greatly reduce the cost of car insurance.
The device, which works by remotely stopping the ignition of a car so that it cannot be stolen by thieves, has been developed by 48-year-old Dr Phillip Tann and has excited insurance companies worldwide. He explains the evolution of the gadget that may one day make motor insurance premiums cheaper for all.
“We were approached by one of our customers who hire out very expensive motors and they required not only the ability to track their vehicles, but also to immobilise and recover them should they be stolen,” he says.
Adding, “As soon as the vehicle’s ignition is turned off the vehicle cannot be restarted and the system pinpoints the vehicle’s location to an accuracy of less than one metre. The vehicle can then be recovered by the owner or the police. We can remotely immobilise a vehicle from anywhere in the world.”
The device may appeal particularly appeal to technology-savvy young drivers as it can be used from a mobile phone, laptop or PC.

Dr. Phillip Tann
Dr. Phillip Tann has previously made the news when he used a gadget attached to his cellphone to demonstrate that he was not driving 42 mph in a 30-mph zone, but actually just under the speed limit, at 29.177196 mph.
When his lawyers demonstrated the computer scientist’s invention, the case was dropped. “They looked flabbergasted,” Tann said. “Police cameras are not 100 percent accurate, but my system is.”

A new partnership between stolen vehicle recovery firm Tracker and the police could help car insurance companies save thousands of pounds.
The recovery company has joined forces with the Association of Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service allowing the police to track and recover vehicles once they have been taken, following a two month pilot scheme.
The initiative, which is known as Operation Semita, has the backing of a number of insurers, including Tracker parent company RBS Insurance. As part of the initiative, the proceeds gained from the vehicle recovery, will be split evenly between Tracker and the insurers.
Tracker managing director Bill Raynal said that around 50% of UK insurers had signed up to the deal, although others were unhappy with halving the proceeds.
He added: “We have a large number of insurers taking part in the scheme but some want to hold out for a greater percentage. However, we are keen to have all insurers signed up.”
Tracker said that around one million cars currently had their tracking facilities installed and that it had recovered more than 18,000 vehicles since 1993.
