AutoSafe – Catching up on Dragons Den

25 Oct

Having just invested in the new BT Vision set-top box, I have been catching up on past Dragons Den episodes. In particular one particular episode featured a pitch from a guy looking for investment in his product AutoSafe. Having a young family myself I know exactly the type of problem AutoSafe seeks to address.

The Autosafe seat belt height adjuster
The company is currently marketing a new product with the comfort and safety in mind for children in the age range of between 4 and 12 years.

The Autosafe seat belt height adjuster was developed to prevent children from placing their arms over a seat belt. It makes the seat belt a more comfortable fit, thus preventing the belt from rubbing the neck. The product is available through selected outlets and from AutoSafe via mail order:

Car Insurance Premiums Continue to Rise

20 Oct

Motor Insurance Premiums up 7.6% in 12 months

I don’t know about other motorists but certainly my salary is not rising in-line with inflation and the latest rises in car insurance premiums, released by the AA’s benchmark British insurance premium index.

The latest figures show that the UK average premium quoted for an annual comprehensive car insurance policy rose 3.1% or £22 over the past quarter, a similar rise to the previous three months. Over the year, quoted premiums have risen by £50 or 7.6%, to an average of £724.28.

AA added the Shoparound index, which better reflects the premiums paid after buyers shop around, has also risen as buyers can now expect to shell out £486 for their annual comprehensive cover: £10 (2%) more than three months ago and a rise of £39 (8.7%) since this time last year.

The average quoted premium for third party, fire and theft cover, typically bought by young drivers, has reduced fractionally (by just 0.6% to £879).

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: “Despite these rises the car insurance industry continues to make an underwriting loss: for every £100 taken in premiums, more than £105 is paid in claims. “Insurers are particularly concerned about increasing legal costs and personal injury claims which last year rose by 22%.”

Director arrested for motor claims fraud

16 Oct

The director of a multi million pound accident management company was arrested for conspiracy to scam UK motor insurers.

The 23 year-old director has possibly made millions by submitting fraudulent accident claims to insurers and has covered this activity by engaging in other business activities, including involvement in numerous London-based accident management companies.

Officers from the Traffic Operational Command Unit began their investigation, codenamed Operation Scarp, eight months ago when insurance companies identified irregularities in the claims being made and the IFB contacted the police.

So-called ‘cash for crash’ scams have typically involved staged crashes, where fictitious paper-based claims were submitted to insurance companies. They have usually involved a low and high value car, where the low value car was ‘at fault’. The party was able to reap maximum pay-out from the claim, including cost of repair, vehicle storage and significant sums for often phony courtesy cars.

In the case of the arrested man, detectives estimated that the director was making an average of £40,000 per dishonest claim by engaging in this type of activity. Part of this sum was generated by his company’s leasing business, which specialised in hiring out high value vehicles such as Mercedes, BMWs and Jaguars costing insurance companies several hundred pounds a day.

Police said the real victims were the motorists who had absorbed the costs of these scams by paying £40 – £50 more annually on their car insurance premiums.

John Hollands of the traffic operational command unit, said: “Criminals who organise this type of crime exploit people in the community who ordinarily would not become involved in criminal activity and believe they won’t be caught. My message is, do not get involved in this crime. If you do, we will find out about it and you will be caught.”

The police have been working with the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) and insurers to prevent this type of fraud. Since May police have arrested over 25 people suspected of involvement in similar actions, who now risk prosecution. Many of them are believed to be otherwise law-abiding citizens who were asked by criminal organisers to provide their details to substantiate the claims and were paid a small sum of money in return with assurance of little or no risk.

In regards to these arrests, Sue Jones, head of unit at the IFB commented: “The success of these arrests shows the power of the private and public sector working collaboratively and sends a very clear message to those criminals involved in this type of crime – the insurance industry is no longer an easy touch, we know who you are and we will continue to work closely with our colleagues in the police to protect honest policyholders. We will detect, disrupt and wherever possible, prosecute these criminals.”

AA Breakdown Cover – First Class Service

13 Oct

Last week I had the misfortune / pleasure of calling on my AA breakdown cover. A near-side, rear tyre blow-out on the A29 near Slindon, West Sussex meant that I had to pull over and utilise the services of the guys from the AA.

In my opinion the vehicle was not going to be able to be fixed on the roadside and hence the AA took me on my word and sent out a recovery truck which arrived pretty quickly after about 70 minutes. After taking a good look at the guilty tyre the patrolman loaded the vehicle onto the truck and we set-off to our destination – Manor Royal, Crawley, West Sussex.

I have to say that the AA man was excellent. Whilst driving back to Crawley in the recovery truck he hatched a plan ‘B’ and organised for a roadside assistance patrol to meet us at our destination. This was to check if the tyre could be replaced with the space saver in the boot – thus (hopefully) sending me on my merry way that same night!

Remember, it was my original assumption that something catastrophic had happened to the rear suspension and the new ’58 plate Ford Mondeo Titanium X was going to be off the road for a few days!!

As it transpired the Roadside Asistance chap was able to diagnose a simple tyre blow-out and fit the space saver when we arrived at Manor Royal in Crawley. Overall the service I received from the AA and particularly the two guys that night was exemplary – first class!
